The problem

Pay stubs and tax forms are full of codes and abbreviations: FICA, OASDI, pre-tax deductions, box 12 codes. People don't know if their withholding is right, whether a deduction is a mistake, or what a form means for tax time.

Step by step

  1. 1Take a photo or screenshot of your pay stub or tax form. Black out your Social Security number, employee ID, address and any bank account numbers first (use your phone's photo markup tool).
  2. 2Open ChatGPT or Claude, attach the image, and paste the prompt below.
  3. 3Read the explanation and the "things to double-check" list. Compare your hours, pay rate and deductions to what you expected.
  4. 4If your withholding looks too high or low, use the free IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov to check it, and update your W-4 with your employer if needed.
  5. 5Ask your payroll or HR department about anything that still looks wrong. For tax filing questions, talk to a tax professional or use the IRS's free resources.

Copy-paste prompt

Prompt
Explain this [pay stub / W-2 / 1099] line by line in plain English. I have covered my personal information. For each line or box: what it means, whether it is money I earned, money taken out, or information only, and whether it is typical. Then: (1) list anything that looks unusual or worth double-checking with payroll, (2) explain what this means for my taxes in general terms, and (3) tell me which numbers I will need at tax time. Do not give personalized tax advice; tell me when a question should go to a tax professional.
