The problem

Internet, phone, TV and insurance prices creep up after promotional rates end, and most people never call to ask for a better deal. Knowing what to say, and what competitors charge, makes the call much easier.

Step by step

  1. 1Get your most recent bill and note: the company, your plan or package, the monthly total, and any line items you don't recognize. Cover your account number if you photograph it.
  2. 2Look up what one or two competitors in your area charge for a similar plan on their websites, and write those prices down.
  3. 3Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, upload the bill photo (or type the details) and paste the prompt below.
  4. 4Call the company's customer service number from the bill. Ask for the "retention" or "loyalty" department and follow the script. Be polite; the person on the phone has more room to help than you might think.
  5. 5Write down what they offer, the new price, how long it lasts and any contract terms. Set a calendar reminder for a month before the new rate ends.

Copy-paste prompt

Prompt
Help me lower this bill. Company type: [internet/phone/TV/insurance]. My current plan: [details]. I pay $[amount]/month. Competitor prices I found: [list]. (1) Explain each charge on my bill in plain English and flag any that look like optional add-ons or fees I could drop. (2) Write a short, polite phone script for asking the retention department for a better rate, including what to say if they say no the first time. (3) List 3 questions to ask before I accept any offer (contract length, price after promo ends, fees). Keep the tone friendly and calm.
