The problem
Planning even a short trip means juggling a dozen browser tabs: things to do, where to eat, drive times, what it will cost. It is easy to overpack the schedule or blow the budget, and the planning itself becomes a chore.
Step by step
- 1Write down the basics: where you are leaving from, the destination (or "somewhere within 3 hours"), dates, who is going (ages of kids matter), budget, and what you like (outdoors, food, history, pool time, rest).
- 2Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude and paste the prompt below with your details.
- 3Ask follow-up questions in the same chat: "swap Saturday afternoon for something indoor in case it rains", "cheaper places to eat", "make Sunday more relaxed".
- 4Check every place it names on Google Maps or the place's own website for hours, prices and whether it is still open. AI suggestions can be out of date.
- 5Book what needs booking, then paste the final plan into a Google Doc or your phone's notes and share it with everyone going.
Copy-paste prompt
Help me plan a trip. Leaving from: [city]. Destination: [place, or "somewhere within X hours drive"]. Dates: [dates]. Travelers: [who, with kids' ages]. Total budget: [$] including [lodging/gas/food/activities]. We like: [interests]. We don't want: [e.g., long hikes, late nights]. Give me: (1) a day-by-day plan with morning, afternoon and evening, drive times between stops, and one rainy-day backup per day; (2) a rough cost estimate by category, marked as estimates; (3) a short packing list for this trip. Keep the schedule relaxed. Tell me which places I should double-check for hours and prices.
Tips and watch-outs
- Treat names, hours and prices as suggestions to verify. AI can recommend places that have closed or changed.
- Costs are rough estimates; check lodging and ticket prices on the real booking sites.
- You don't need to share your home address or exact travel dates if you'd rather not; a nearby city and "a weekend in May" works fine.
