Scale a recipe up or down and find substitutions that work
Double a recipe for a crowd, cut one in half, or swap a missing ingredient without wrecking the dish.
Estimate: 10–15 minutes of recipe math, plus fewer failed batches. (Estimate; results vary.)

The problem
Doubling or halving a recipe means awkward math (half of 3/4 cup?), and running out of one ingredient halfway through can ruin dinner. Baking is especially picky about swaps.
Step by step
- 1Copy the original recipe from the website, card or cookbook (type it or snap a photo).
- 2Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and paste the prompt below with how many servings you need and what you are missing or need to avoid.
- 3Ask for amounts in measurements you can actually use (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons) and for pan size and time changes. Bigger batches often need a bigger pan or a longer cook time, not just more of everything.
- 4For baking, use the AI's substitutions as a starting point and go with tested swaps only (for example the ones on the flour or baking-soda maker's website) when it matters.
- 5Make a note on the recipe of what you changed and how it turned out, so the next time is easy.
Copy-paste prompt
Here is a recipe: [paste it]. It makes [number] servings. I need [number] servings. I am missing or need to avoid: [ingredients, allergies, or "nothing"]. My pans and gear: [e.g. 9x13 pan, two 8-inch rounds, slow cooker]. Give: (1) the scaled ingredient list in easy kitchen measurements (no odd fractions like 0.375 cup; convert to cups, tablespoons and teaspoons); (2) any change to pan size, oven temperature or cook time, and how to tell when it is done; (3) substitutions for what I am missing, with how each one changes taste or texture, and tell me plainly if a swap is risky (especially for baking); (4) allergen warnings if a substitution adds a common allergen.
Tips and watch-outs
- Baking is chemistry: leavening, eggs and flour swaps are the riskiest, so stick to tested substitutions.
- Bigger batches usually need a bigger pan or more time, so check doneness with a thermometer or toothpick instead of the clock.
- Some substitutions add allergens (nut milks, wheat flours); double-check for anyone with allergies.
