Turn a recipe video into a printable recipe card and shopping list
Get a clean ingredient list, steps and grocery list from a cooking video so you are not pausing and rewinding at the stove.
Estimate: 10–20 minutes per recipe, plus fewer mistakes from missed steps. (Estimate; results vary.)

The problem
Recipe videos on YouTube, Facebook and TikTok look easy, but the amounts flash by on screen and the steps are buried in chatter. Cooking from a video means pausing with messy hands and still missing something.
Step by step
- 1Find the video you want to cook. For YouTube, copy the link; Gemini can often summarize a public YouTube video from its link. If it cannot, open the video description, click "Show transcript" and copy the transcript text.
- 2For Facebook, Instagram or TikTok videos, copy the caption (many creators put the full recipe there) and jot down any amounts you see on screen. AI tools usually cannot watch those videos from a link.
- 3Paste the link, transcript or caption into Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude with the prompt below.
- 4Compare the recipe card to the video once before you cook. Anything the AI marks "estimated" was not stated, so check it against a similar trusted recipe.
- 5Paste the card into a Google Doc called "Our Recipes" (one heading per recipe) and print it or keep it open on a tablet. Copy the shopping list into your phone notes.
Copy-paste prompt
Turn this cooking video into a recipe card. Source: [paste the YouTube link, the transcript, or the caption and any amounts I noted]. Servings I want: [number]. Give: (1) the recipe name and servings; (2) an ingredient list with amounts in US measurements, marking any amount you had to guess as "(estimated)"; (3) numbered steps with times, temperatures and pan sizes; (4) a grocery list grouped by store section; (5) any food-safety notes, such as the safe internal temperature for the meat. Do not invent steps the video does not show; say "not shown" instead.
Tips and watch-outs
- Most AI tools cannot watch Facebook, Instagram or TikTok videos from a link; the caption or the YouTube transcript is the reliable route.
- Check every amount marked "estimated" against the video or a trusted recipe before you cook.
- Keep a link to the original video with each recipe card so you can credit the creator and rewatch tricky steps.
