The problem
Many LinkedIn profiles were set up years ago and never updated: a vague headline, no About section, and job titles with no detail. Recruiters search LinkedIn by skills and titles, so a thin profile is easy to miss.
Step by step
- 1Copy your current LinkedIn headline, About section and the descriptions of your last two or three jobs (or paste your resume). Note the kind of job you want next.
- 2Open ChatGPT or Claude and paste the prompt below with that text.
- 3On LinkedIn, click your photo → "View Profile", then the pencil icon next to your name to update your headline. Scroll to About and click the pencil to paste the new version. Update each job under Experience the same way.
- 4Add 5–10 relevant skills under the Skills section and a clear, friendly profile photo.
- 5If you are job hunting, use the "Open to" button on your profile to tell recruiters what roles you want. You can choose to show this to recruiters only.
Copy-paste prompt
Help me refresh my LinkedIn profile. The kind of job I want next: [role, industry, location]. My current profile or resume: [paste]. Write: (1) three headline options under 200 characters that say what I do and what I'm good at (not just "Seeking opportunities"); (2) an About section under 1,500 characters in first person, plain and friendly, with what I do, 2–3 accomplishments, and what I'm looking for; (3) 3–4 bullet points for each of my last two jobs, with results where I've given them; (4) 10 skills to list. Use only facts from my text and mark spots where I should add a number.
Tips and watch-outs
- Only list skills and results you can talk about in an interview.
- If you are job hunting while employed, set "Open to work" to recruiters only.
- Avoid sharing your home address, birth date or personal phone number publicly.
