Plan a holiday or party meal with a cooking timeline

Turn your menu and guest count into a shopping list and a day-by-day, hour-by-hour plan so everything is hot at the same time.

Estimated time saved

Estimate: 1–2 hours of planning, and a much calmer day. (Estimate; results vary.)

Tools
  • ChatGPT (free)
  • Claude (free)
  • Google Gemini (free)
  • Google Docs or Sheets (free)
Time to set up

30–60 minutes, a week or so ahead

Cost

Free (free tier of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini), plus Google Docs

Please note: Food safety first: check that food is fresh, cook meat and poultry to USDA safe internal temperatures (see FoodSafety.gov; 165°F for poultry), and refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours. AI can miss allergens and misread photos, so read labels yourself. This is general cooking help, not nutrition or medical advice.

The problem

Thanksgiving, Christmas or a big birthday dinner means one oven, a dozen dishes and everyone eating at the same time. Most of the stress comes from timing: what to buy, what to thaw, and what goes in the oven when.

Step by step

  1. 1Write your menu (or ask the AI to suggest one), the number of guests, the time you want to eat, and what other people are bringing.
  2. 2List your kitchen setup: how many ovens, burners, slow cookers or an air fryer, plus fridge space. This is what makes a timeline realistic.
  3. 3Paste the prompt below into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
  4. 4Check the turkey or roast thaw and cook times against USDA guidance on FoodSafety.gov. For example, a frozen turkey thaws in the fridge at about 24 hours for every 4–5 pounds, so a big bird needs to start thawing days ahead. Cook poultry to 165°F, checked with a thermometer.
  5. 5Paste the shopping list and timeline into a Google Doc, print it, and tape it to the cabinet. Give helpers specific jobs from the list.

Copy-paste prompt

Prompt
Help me plan a [holiday/party] meal. Guests: [number, including kids]. We want to eat at: [time] on [day]. Menu: [list, or "suggest a classic Southern menu"]. Guests bringing: [list]. Kitchen: [number of ovens, burners, slow cookers, air fryer, fridge space]. Allergies or diets: [list or "none"]. Give: (1) a shopping list grouped by store section with quantities for this many people; (2) a make-ahead plan for the days before (including when to start thawing any frozen meat, using USDA fridge-thawing guidance); (3) an hour-by-hour timeline for the day of, so oven space does not conflict and everything is ready together; (4) a short task list I can hand to helpers; (5) food-safety reminders on safe internal temperatures and leftovers.
