The problem
Doctor visits go fast. People forget what they meant to ask, downplay symptoms, or leave without understanding the next steps. A one-page agenda helps you use the time well.
Step by step
- 1Before you use any AI tool, black out or leave out Social Security numbers, insurance IDs, full medical record numbers, and exact street addresses. Use general descriptions ("knee pain for 3 weeks") rather than uploading entire chart PDFs.
- 2Write a rough list: main symptoms (when they started, what makes them better or worse), medications and supplements you take, allergies, and the top 3 questions you want answered.
- 3Open ChatGPT or Claude and paste the prompt below with that list only.
- 4Copy the one-page agenda into Google Docs or your phone notes. Bring it to the visit (printed or on your phone). Check anything important against what the clinician says; AI is not a diagnosis.
- 5For emergencies (chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of stroke, severe bleeding, suicidal thoughts), call 911 or go to the ER — do not wait on an AI chat. Care decisions belong with your clinician.
Copy-paste prompt
Help me prepare for a doctor visit. Main concerns (no ID numbers or insurance info): [symptoms, how long, what makes them better/worse]. Medications/supplements: [list or "none"]. Allergies: [list or "none"]. My top questions: [list]. Make a calm one-page visit agenda: (1) a 3–4 sentence summary I can read to the clinician; (2) a bullet list of symptoms with timing; (3) my prioritized questions; (4) space labeled "plan we agreed on" and "follow-up" for me to fill in during the visit. Do NOT diagnose, suggest prescription drugs, or tell me to ignore professional care. Remind me that this is not medical advice and that emergencies mean 911.
Tips and watch-outs
- Never paste Social Security numbers, insurance member IDs, full chart PDFs or medical record numbers into consumer AI tools.
- AI does not diagnose and does not replace your clinician. Emergencies (chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, severe bleeding, suicidal thoughts): call 911.
- Use the agenda as a memory aid; follow the care plan your clinician gives you.
Review AI output before using it. Don’t paste confidential, customer or patient data into tools your company hasn’t approved.
