The problem

Cover letters feel like a chore, so people skip them or send a generic one. A short, specific letter that connects your experience to the job can be what gets a recruiter to read your resume.

Step by step

  1. 1Gather your resume, the job posting, and 2–3 notes in your own words: why you want this job, one accomplishment you're proud of, and anything that explains a gap or career change.
  2. 2Open ChatGPT or Claude and paste the prompt below with those pieces.
  3. 3Read the draft out loud. Change any phrase you would never say. Cut anything that sounds over the top.
  4. 4Check the company name, job title and hiring manager's name (if listed) are correct.
  5. 5Paste it into the application, or save it as a PDF in the same style as your resume.
