The problem
When the dishwasher flashes an error code or the furnace won't start, the paper manual is long gone. Searching online turns up forums with wrong models, and calling for service costs money even if the fix is a reset button.
Step by step
- 1Find the model number: it's on a sticker or plate, usually inside the door, on the back, or near the controls. Take a photo of it.
- 2Search the manufacturer's website for "[model number] manual" and download the PDF owner's manual (and the installation manual if there is one). Use the manufacturer's site rather than random PDF sites.
- 3Go to notebooklm.google.com, create a new notebook and upload the manual PDF. NotebookLM answers from the manual itself and shows which page each answer came from. (You can also attach the PDF in ChatGPT or Claude.)
- 4Ask your question using the prompt below, including any error code or what the appliance is doing.
- 5Follow only the steps the manual says are owner-safe. For gas appliances, electrical panels or anything that says "service technician only", call a pro.
Copy-paste prompt
Using only this appliance manual, answer my question: [describe what is happening, including any error code or blinking lights]. Give: (1) what the manual says the code or symptom means, with the page number; (2) the troubleshooting steps the manual says an owner can safely do, in order; (3) anything the manual says requires a service technician; (4) the recommended maintenance schedule for this model. If the manual does not cover my question, say so instead of guessing.
Tips and watch-outs
- Download manuals from the manufacturer's website, not random PDF sites.
- Unplug the appliance or turn off its breaker before opening panels, and shut off gas appliances per the manual.
- Anything marked "service technician only" in the manual is a job for a pro.
